Monument record BSE 255 - 19th century maltings south of Northgate Station Bury St Edmunds

A 19th century malting south of Northgate Station Bury St Edmunds. Visible on 1880's, 1900' and 1920's OS maps.

2005 Historic Building Recording: The site comprise 16 buildings, both freestanding and abutting/interlinked structures and additional lean-to or freestanding canopy structures. The only physical evidence of the former mid-19th century malthouse remaining was a brick wall and debris. From cartographic and other historic evidence the malthouse comprised an elongated rectangular building in plan form with a pitched roof, roughly orientated east-west. This was abutted by two similar kilns, featuring pyramidal roofs with central flues. The standing buildings on the site represent the gradual adaption of malting/brewing methods. The malting was built at the Station Hill site as a result of the railway link. Malthouse marked on 1886, 1904, 1926 OS maps, however by 1965 OS Map the area was market Depot and Warehouses.
