Full Description
Darel's Battery was built on the site of a redundant saluting battery, on the western side of the glacis of Landguard Fort, close to the sea wall and facing across the mouth of Harwich Haven. The new battery was built between May 1900 and April 1901 as Minefield Battery and equipped with tow 4.7-inch guns on quick-firing (QF) mounts, these guns worked in conjunction with two others on the south side of the haven at Beacon Hill. In 1904 the Battery was re-named Darell's Battery, to commemorate the successful defence of Landguard Fort by Captain Nathaniel Darell agaist an assult by the Dutch in 1667 (S1).
1940-56: In 1939 or 1940 it was decided to rebuild Darell's Battery for new guns, two QF twin 6-pdr's. These combined two QF guns on the same mounting each one capable of firing 60-120 rounds per minute. Post 1945 the guns were modified to enable greater elevation so they could also be used agasinst aircraft. In 1956 the battery was stood down (S1).
