Full Description

This church is within the diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, the archdeaconry of Sudbury and the deanery of Mildenhall. Status: rectory (S1).
The structure is: chancel, nave, S porch, W tower. The nave and chancel are Norman, the W tower is Decorated (S2).
The E window of the chancel is circa 1300 and consists of three lights, a big circle and in it a finely cusped pointed trefoil and three little circles. The font is Norman or C13, the angles were recut at a later date. The basic shape is square. The N and S doorways are C12; each has detached cushion capped shafts to the jambs with later arches inserted above. The N wall of the nave contains a pretty niche with a nodding ogee arch in the canopy. In general, the tracery of the windows in the church is very good. The W tower is square, of flints, with buttresses and battlements. The S porch is small and contains a water stoup (S2).
The existing church is the rebuilt nave of the medieval church. It was rebuilt in 1875. The church underwent a thorough restoration in 1875, all the windows were filled with stained glass, (this has since gone). During the same restoration the church was re-roofed and re-seated (S2). A church is recorded here in the Domesday Survey belonging to the Abbey of Bury St Edmunds: 'Warnforda... a church with 15 acres of free land' (S3). 19910731: Parch mark visible in grass extending E end circa 10m beyond present - ?former chancel extension ? (S4).
