Full Description

Wenhaston Hall is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed Os map. The farmstead is laid out in a linear plan with additional detached elements. The farmhouse is detached and set away from the yard. The farmstead sits alongside a public road in an isolated location. This farmstead survives intact with modern sheds to the side.

Group of agricultural buildings, including a timber-framed 18th C threshing barn of 5 bays, a 19th C brick granary and a 19th C timber cartshed, which has also been used in recent years to house cattle (S1).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data (S5).

Old Hall Farm stable is a significant element within the immediate setting of Old Hall Farmhouse which may possibly have been the site of the Manor House for Wenhaston
Manor in the 16th/17th centuries. The site has significant historic cultural value in its association with the Leman family and the artist Harry Becker who lived at Old Hall in the early 20th century. Although the stable building has no outstanding architectural features it is a typical example of a brick and pantile farm building characteristically found in the Rolling Estate Sandlands character area of the Suffolk landscape. The building replicates the dentil eaves cornice and brick bond found in the 19th century alterations to the S element of Old Hall Farmhouse and as such is an integral part of the farmstead (S6).
