Full Description

In 1964/65, after the concreting over of the area to the south west of the basin, a roll-on roll-off (Ro-Ro) pontoon berth was constructed with a crane quay alongside it for the easier loading and unloading of vehicles and trailers (Plate 78). The crane moved along runners on the quay in order to load and unload cargo from ships, whilst the Ro-Ro pontoon allowed the easy ingress and egress of vehicles between ships with rear-opening doors and the newly concreted surface south west of the Dock Basin. The Ro-Ro pontoon was the first of its type in the world and was to revolutionise both ferry and cargo shipping (S1, S2).
