Full Description

130' well shaft discovered in the road in The Traverse in late c20 - possibly related to known mine shafts in the area.

In the 1970s/80s a 130' deep dry well shaft was uncovered in The Traverse during gas works. The mouth of the shaft was bricked over when discovered. The shaft was plumbed and was estimated to be more than 130' deep. The shaft was capped with a reinforced slab. This shaft may relate to another possible ventilation shaft on Woolhall Street (BSE 286). (S1)
