Full Description
Area of partially surviving historic landscape adjoining (and including) Smithwood Green (see COK ***). These were mostly small tenements (often originally with a house) on 'both sides of this green were on ancient acreware land whose rents were either spices pepper or cumin or gallins (hens). This land became part of the Cockfield hall Manor after 1066' (S1).
Acreware land, suggesting early tenure of farmland including 'sackage' land - (giving grazing rights) and 'campo' names. Defined by local historian Vera Lloyd using various early maps, field names and other documents (her map is held in large hanging cabinet) (S1).
Partly encompassed within 2nd WW airfield (LVM 066) - all the inhabitants were rehoused in council houises newly built in Crowbrook - many of the boundaries have now gone.
