Full Description
Broad Oak Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed OS map and the Bramfield Tithe map. The farmhouse is listed and dated to the 16th century. The farmstead is laid out in a regular E-plan with additional L-plan and detached elements. The farmhouse is detached and set away from the yards. The farmstead is situated on a private track in an isolated location. The E-plan has been reduced to an F-plan and the L-plan is completley lost representing a partial loss (25%).
16th C timber-framed farm house with an 18th C brick façade. Its roof was destroyed in 1980. A 19th C timber-framed and weatherbaorded granary is also lcoated at the site. A number of lean to extensions have been added to this structure during the 19th C. 4 original grain bins still survive on the first floor of the building (S1).
Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
