Full Description
Group of outbuildings in the grounds of a 17th C timber-framed manor house. Attached to one corner of the house is an 18th C brick outhouse.
A 17th C timber-framed 4 bay granary above stables, a cowhouse, a roothouse and a horseworks that once contained a horse mill is present at the site. A number of the ground floor walls were reconstructed in brick during the 20th C, although the first floor framing survives more in-tact. The frame includes a number of timbers which have been re-used from an earlier building. The building also originally cotnained a number of mullion windows and a fllor structure, which has sicne been removed.
Also present is a 17th C timber-framed threshing barn of 8 and a half bays.
During the 19th C a number of other outbuildings were also constructed, including a further cowhouses and stables, a cartshed, a fowl house and piggeries (S1).
Wattisfield Hall, Wattisfield. 17th century farmstead and farmhouse with converted buildings. Regular courtyard multi-yard plan formed by working agricultural buildings. The farmhouse is set away from the yard. Partial loss (less than 50%) of the traditional farm buildings. Located within a village (S2-7).
Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
