Full Description
Large ring ditch, possibly remains of a large round barrow of complex construction, possibly a bell barrow or a barrow which has been successively enlarged. Outer ditch circa 48m diameter with much smaller inner enclosure, slightly to N of centre, circa 17m in diameter, which has possible entrance on S and is encircled by a ring of pits. Interior possibly former mound or raised platform (from APs) of circa 15m diameter (S1). Part of group - see STT 004-006 and 008-010. Also large central pit (S2).
1973: Ploughed fields. No surface finds (S1).
1981: E half of E area ploughed: W of footpath (?) heath. (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) says that the site has been fieldwalked by members of the Sutton Hoo research project (John Newman?)(S1).
1985: All of E scheduled area is now in cultivation. When visited it was under stubble and had recently been subsoiled. Thin scatter of struck flint over most of surface. Some rabbit holes. Natural dip in W-centre corresponds to gap between 3 northern and 3 southern ring ditches. "B" has what is probably a turf stack in the centre with a concentric surrounding ring of timber uprights (S1).
January 1998: Scheduled area revised - details in (S1). NGR amended after (S2).
Possible henge?
September 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme.
The ring ditch described above is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S3)-(S12). It was difficult to be certain of the possible pit alignment described above since there were many possible pits visible across the area, which may in fact relate to geological features. A central pit measuring approximately 15-17m in diameter was recorded, however.
A Bronze Age date has tentatively been suggested in the light of its apparent relationship with the barrow cemetery recorded as SHER STT 064. The available photographs were difficult to rectify hence the location of the features should be treated with a hint of caution.
