Full Description

Low's Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed OS map. The farmstead is laid out in a regular T-plan patter with an attached farmhouse. An additional yard in a U-plan pattern, and a detached barn are also visible on OS map. The farm house, one range of the U plan, and the detached barn remain though the working buildings have been converted representing significant loss (50%). The farmstead is set back from a public road in a village.

Buildings are shown on the ordnance Survey of 1903, and probably formed mid-19th century cart-lodges or animal shelters. Structures underwent very considerable alteration c.1996 when they were converted into a workshop, car port and office, and their original form is no longer apparent. The nearby barn is now a private house in separate ownership. Given the extent of the building alterations it was determined that insufficinet historic fabric remained to merit recording (S1).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
