Summary

Full Description

Chedburgh Hall is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed Os map. The farmstead is laid out in a regular E-plan with the farmhouse detached and set away from the yard. The farmstead is set alongside a public road in an isolated location. All working buildings have been lost with large scale additional infrastructure on site. (S1-4)

10662 manors each consisting of 1 carucate held by 2 free men.
1086 Manor of 2 carucates, belonging to Abbot of St Ethelreds. (S5)

Chedburgh Hall & Arneboroughe
1315 T. Verdan held of the Bishop of Eye for half a fee, late C14th Sir J. de Pilkingon owns.
1510 Sir R. Drury, linked to SMT, COK.
1764 W. Henry, 2nd Earl of Bristol, linked to IKW & many other manors in Suffolk. (S5)

The C11th info and the double name suggest 2 manorial areas, there is no clear sign of a second manorial complex other than this. (S5)

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
