Monument record EYE 115 - Hartismere Hospital, Eye

Archaeological excavation revealed a single pit, dated to the Early Iron Age. It appears to represent the partial remains of a highly truncated feature, in the northern part of the excavation area. The pit measured 1.07m in length, 1.02m in width and 0.08m in depth. It contained pottery of up to six vessels dated between 800BC and 350BC. Extensive quarry activity was identified in the south west corner of the site. The quarrying is of probable medieval to post medieval date and contributed to the truncation of the prehistoric site. This quarrying appears to have been heavily truncated in the modern period, possibly as part of the construction of the railway embankment for the Eye-Mellis railway line. Two pits of late post medieval date was identified which may be related to the nearby railway line. Twelve struck flint were also identified (S1).
