Full Description

Archaeological evaluation identified several archaeological features. Trench 1 contained an east-west orientated ditch which appeared to have ceased to be maintained in the early post-medieval period (15th to 16th century), although it could have been dug in the late medieval period. It continued as a shallow landscape feature and appears to have finally filled up in the 17th to 18th century. The ditch almost certainly formed the boundary ditch at the back of a plot fronting onto what is now Mill Street. A small undated pit was perhaps of medieval or early post-medieval date.
Trench 2 contained a north-south orientated ditch which seemed to have been deliberately backfilled in the 13th to 14th centuries. This was probably one of the original medieval plot boundaries which presumably extended back from what is now Mill Street. Trench 2 also contained a large (probable quarry) pit which appeared to have been filled in the same period and a small pit and small shallow post-hole both of unknown date. At the western end of the trench was either an elongated pit or large ditch which contained an18th-/19th-century brick fragment indicating that it became filled at this time (S1).
