Monument record GSG 041 - Medieval features at Oak House Farm, Mill Street, Gislingham

2012: Excavation recorded two ditches, a possible animal drinking platform associated with one of the ditches, three possible post-holes, an extraction pit and a pond. The ditches and the pond were also identified during the earlier trial trench evaluation phase, along with other undated pits and a pit of probably 13th- 14th century date. The combined results of the evaluation and excavation suggest that the slightly larger, N-W to S-E aligned ditch was probably maintained until the 15th-16th centuries and then filled up during the 17th-18th centuries when it ceased to become a feature of the landscape. A clay extraction pit and a pond appeared to have been excavated sometime in the 15th-16th centuries. This date appears to coincide with the abandonment of the N-W to S-E aligned ditch and therefore my indicate a change in landuse (S1).
