Monument record HEP 032 - Evidence of Late Saxon to 14th century occupation at Maltings Farm, The Street, Hepworth

2012: Evaluation identified linear boundary ditches, one of which was cut by a pit, and a small linear ditch interpreted as a property boundary. Pottery found within the ditches and pit date to 10-11th century. The small ditch contained a high concentration of pottery dating to 13th-14th centuries. In addition to this there were two post hole alignments. Therefore there is strong evidence for occupation of this site and demonstrates that there was an established allotment of properties developing along the street in Hepworth from at least the late Saxon period in the 10th century through to the 14th century. Possibly by the 15th century there was a shift of domestic settlement within the village, to a concentration nearer to the church (S1).
