Full Description

2013: An archaeological community event excavating 29 test pits by local residents and other volunteers. The event was organised by the Hoxne Heritage Group, as part of their HLF funded project 'The Story of Hoxne'. The test pits frequently demonstrated that preserved archaeological layers are present - see HXN 062, 063-072 and DEN 012.

A possible former 19th century yard surface was seen in Test Pit 22, as well as a single fragment of 12th-14th century pottery. Other pottery identified from this pit were fragments of 15th-18th century pottery, including the handle of a pipkin or skillet. A range of other post-medieval artefacts such as CBM, clay tobacco pipe and glass, along with a large quantity of animal bone and oyster shell which was seen below the former yard surface (S1).
