Monument record HXN 071 - Undated flint surface and post-medieval finds, Bethesda, Hackfield Green

2013: An archaeological community event excavating 29 test pits by local residents and other volunteers. The event was organised by the Hoxne Heritage Group, as part of their HLF funded project 'The Story of Hoxne'. The test pits frequently demonstrated that preserved archaeological layers are present - see HXN 062, 063-072 and DEN 012.

An undated underlying layer of compacted flint surface was seen in Test Pit 26, while it could simply represent a former pathway from road to the house, it could pre-date the property, possibly relating to the road or track crossing the former green. Finds recovered include, post-medieval pottery, a complete 17th century copper alloy thimble with punched holes, found directly above the flint surface. Motar fragments recovered may be the remnants of a wall. A possible horse tooth was also recovered (S1).
