1974: A watching brief was carried out on the excavation of a new basement 12msquare at the rear of the above building. Observations revealed a medieval flint and mortar boundary wall in the upper levels and 28 pits were recorded as they were removed by the machine in the natural gravel. On the basis of the pottery retrieved from these pits 3 were Middle Saxon, 6 were Late Saxon, 7 medieval, and the remainder, post-medieval or undateable. The method of excavation precluded the observation of any traces of Middle, (S1).
