Full Description

2011-2012: Monitoring of second phase of groundworks for extension to Woodhall C P school. This project follows phase 1 (SUY 107). The monitoring observed the mechanical excavation of pipe trenches, an 8m by 8m soak-away and aproximate 230m of footing trences. A single pit that contained 3 naturally shed, reasonably complete red dee antlers, butchered animal bone, sheep horncore and struck flints was identified within the soak-away area. The pit is undated but the deposition of the antlers at the base of pits has been encountered previously on Iron Age sites in Suffolk. The placement of antlers and subsequent deposition of worked horns and butchered bone may represent a series of votive offerings. Alternatively pit might have been used has temporary storage and, with the ability to hold water, to softening antler for working (S1).
