Full Description
2014, Britannia Archaeology Ltd (BA) undertook a programme of archaeological monitoring at 16 Northgate Street, Ipswich, Suffolk (NGR 616500 244720), during the excavation of foundation trenches and other intrusive ground works associated with the construction of a wall extension and garden room.
Despite the potential for remains relating to Anglo-Saxon and medieval occupation, only later post-medieval and modern activity was evident during the works, probably due to the relatively shallow depth of the foundation trenches and significant depth of postmedieval and modern deposits.
A wall foundation 1004, was recorded at the eastern end of the site and is likely to be related to extensions noted on the 1883 Ipswich Town plan. The current garden wall (and medieval arched door folly) would have formed the back wall of these extensions. They were not present on the 1952 OS map which shows the same layout as the modern site.
The depth of the post-medieval and modern deposits encountered suggests that the much of the up-cast soil from previous phases of work and demolition, have been spread across the site rather than being removed. It is also possible that any earlier archaeology in the immediate area of the site and to the rear of Northgate Street frontage, is quite well preserve, due to the depth of the overlying deposits, (S1).
