Full Description

Pair of cottages. Early 18th century. Red brick facade to timber frame. Modern pantiles to roof. No.28 has projecting brick porch. Both buildings have been much altered. 2 storeys. Scattered fenestration: modern casements with glazing bars. Segmental brick arches. Both 28 and 29 have modern entrance doors. Plain brick stack over entrance porch of No.28; probably originally lobby entrance. Single storey, former Smithy to right hand gable of No.29 but not listable in its own right (S1).

No 28 and 29 are listed but the former smithy attached to no. 29 was not deemed listable in its own right. The building comprises 5 adjoining parts of which the divisions are shown on the 1881 1st edition Ordnance Survey map. The buildings have been much altered in the 20th century but care has been taken to preserve historic features. The entry comprises of the smithy travis, the smithy itself, cottage no. 28, cottage no. 29, and a timber and weatehrboard stable at the east end. The west ground floor room of no. 29 was run as a tearoom between 1948-49. No. 29 and 29 were converted into one property in the 1920s (S2).
