Full Description
2003: During works to convert the hall into 2 dwellings, a linking range to join the western end of the hall to an existing outbuilding was to be constructed. These works were to be subject to archaeological monitoring however the building works were completed without notice to allow monitoring of works. The excavation of a storm drain and soakaway was monitored and results showed that the ground level near the outbuilding had been raised with imported topsoil which overlay a horizon of redeposited chalk sealing the original ground surface at a depth of over 0.60m. Bricks from the chalk layer indicated the layer was laid down during the post medieval period and was likely a yeard surface associated with all farmyard complex. Groundworkers noted this layer was encountered during construction of footings for the linking range. The silt layer below the chalk produced a sherd of medieval coarseware and a piece of brick of 15th-16th century date. (S1).
