Full Description

Two brooches (1st - 2nd Century) and a ring (probable Roman) found metal detecting. Reported April 1997 as follows (S1): (NOTE: Parish named Bradfield Combust in error)

1. Copper alloy brooch, Colchester derivative double lug type. 1st Century AD. Bent, missing half spring and pin. Half spring has 6 coils. Flat plain arms. Broad angular pierced lug. Flat backed bow with convex/triangular front; small edge flanges; central pair of grooves with reserved ?wavy line or beaded line (very worn). Damaged catchplate.
Original length c70mm+ ; width 29mm. Compare (cf): WSW 002 nos 154,157; ERL 023.

2. Copper alloy brooch fragment, enamelled disc type. ?2nd Century AD. Broken, approx half missing, corroded margins. Pin hinged on 2 closeset lugs. Marginal knobs and hexagonal outline. Outer ring has alternating round-topped (containing green) and square (containing ?blue) enamelled shapes with red background triangles. Groove defining inner circle which has 5-petals (containing green) with red triangles behind.
Diameter c.29mm, plate c. 5mm high. Type as Hattatt 1065 (but different outer ring detail).

3. Copper alloy ring, circular section hoop, corroded bezel area, where it expands slightly and has a central cross moulding - just possibly shows two opposed dolphins? ?Roman.
Internal diameter 18-20mm. Max section diameter c. 4mm.
