Full Description

Moat, sub-square, occupied, isolated, water filled (S1)(R1).
Named as 'Monewden Folly' but not depicted as structure on Jos Hodskinson's 1783 map (S3).
Marked as moat and buildings named 'The Folly' on 1836 OS map.
Shown as Folly Farm with buildings and surrounding moat on 1880s and later OS mapping.
The moated site has been identified as a park-keeper's lodge set in a medieval deer park. According to an early 18th century description this house, which was known at that time as Monewden Folly, was built on the ruins of an earlier building known as Monewden Lodge. Details in (S2).
Note: a deer park is recorded at Monewden in 1317 (Rosemary Hoppitt, PhD thesis - Cal. Pat R. 1317-21, p 82).
The surrounding area appears likely to be an enclosed [deer] park, especially on the 1880s OS mapping (tithe map, ownership and field names need checking). The deer park element has not been mapped for the HER.
Folly Farm House demolished in 1950s.
1994: moat Scheduled (S2).
