Monument record EYE 125 - Late medieval and post medieval stonework found in rear garden at 21 Castle Street

1992: A site visit was made to examine worked stone found in the back garden of 21 Eye Street. The stone included fragments of Late Medieval window mullions and column bases. These fragments were possibly from the Priory or Hospital. Post Medieval York paving stone, kerbstones and fragments of 17th to early 18th century grave stone were also identified. It is presumed that this stone was rubble that was brought in to form a solid surface. There is no evidence that the chapel located to the east, built c.1870, included this back garden within its grounds. The owner also excavated to a depth of c.5ft in the back garden, possibly over an area of ditch associated with the outer bailey of Eye Castle (S1).
