Full Description

Moat, occupied, isolated, near parish boundary, approximately square. Two arms infilled.
Entire plan shown on OS 1:10560 provisional edition, undated, two arms existing on OS 1:10000, 1983 (S1)(S2).

1998: Trenched evaluation of part interior prior to swimming pool revealed a medieval pit containing a single sherd 12th to 14th century pottery sherd. The trenching across the proposed area of the pool indicated the area of the moat island covered by 0.3m layer of topsoil. Investigations within the demolished brick building indicated a similar depth of build -up. Little evidence was identified to suggest there is any upcast material from the original excavation of the moat deposited in this part of the moat island. Details in (S3)

1998: Monitoring of groundworks for a swimming pool and greenhouse adjacent to the house on the island area at Moat Farm, Dallinghoo, revealed some evidence for the medieval period on the site and evidence of more recent ground disturbance. Close to the house a footing trench appeared to cut through a pit which contained pottery sherds of 12th -13th century date, in addition a few stray sherds of medieval date were collected from the site. A deep well of probable late 19th century date was also revealed by the contractors adjacent to the house and various 19th/20th century pitsmwere noted during the monitoring visits(S4).

Feb 2004: further monitoring on S side of entrance causeway prior to rebuilding of barn - see DLL 011.

The inclusion of farm buildings within the moated enclosure is relatively unusual
