Full Description
William Downes' map of 1815 does not show the house but instead a courtyard of buildings. The land is inscribed on the map as belong to a Mr James Daniells. The same complex of buildings, then belonging to John King and called Holgate, is shown on the 1840 Tithe Award Map where again the house is not shown. However it was almost certainly built in that year. The staircase is dated September 1840 in pencil on the underside. The house has lost nearly all of its original fixtures. The handsome entrance doorcase appears original and accurate for 1840 and is shown on all the subsequent maps. The front reception Room retained a section of lath and plaster on vertical battens fixed to the walls with wrought iron nails into wooden plugs. The walls were built of white gault facing bricks and the unseen brickwork of red brick. The interiors were plastered with lime render before being battened over. By the time of the 1886 Ordnance Survey map the house was called Holgate House and had acquired a stair tower that connected the basement to the ground floor. The house was renamed Arthur Hall before 1904 and renamed Sudbury Hall between 1964 and 1973. The house was largely rebuilt after it was converted to the Tarantella Restaurant and Hotel in 1973. Most of the floors were replaced in block and beam and the making good done in medium density blockwork to support RSJ’s and concrete beams. All the windows were replaced with double glazing. The grounds were extensively landscaped to a very high standard. The house was badly damaged by fire in January 2008, and has remained derelict ever since. (S1)
