Full Description

April 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme.
A World War Two direction finding (D/F) station (or a similar type of communications/navigation site) is visible as a group of structures, connected by pathways, on aerial photographs dating from 1944 onwards (S1)-(S3). As Leiston Very High Frequency (VHF) Fixer Station, it remained in use into the Cold War period under the Rotor programme. It was dismantled by 1968. See National Record of the Historic Environment record TM 46 SE 82 (S4). Possible structures in the adjacent field to the north, visible in 1945 but not on photographs from other years, have not been mapped, as they are more likely to be agricultural than military. The two small structures visible on the southwest side of the site in 1945 had been removed by 1946.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 22nd April 2015.
