Full Description

'Rookery Mound'. Excavations 1885-1886 by Major E C Moor produced 'B' beaker sherds, BA, Neo and IA sherds also flint flakes, scrapers, barbed and tanged arrowheads etc (R1).
'In this park (of Bealings House) is an early British mound (a round one) within which have been found many specimens of British pottery and flint implements, most of them now in the possession of Major E C Moor. Near this tumulus is the pedestal of an ancient wayside cross.'(R2).
No sign of tumulus, 6 February 1981, in undulating parkland. ? whether this is the same site as BEG 001. Grid reference for BEG 004 is derived from IPSMG card.
Excavation notes by Major Moor, dated November 1885 - March 1886, were in Ipswich Museum Library in 1950 when they were copied by Basil Brown (R5). Though Moor uses the term 'tumulus' occasionally, he appears to have dug over a fairly wide area, finding the natural soil at a depth of two and half feet. Found many patches of burnt earth containing bones, charcoal and stone. Also found pottery. Some of the bone appears to have been human. It is not clear whether he was digging a barrow or a natural mound with ? occupation debris. 'East Anglian' type beaker (R4).
Basil Brown's copy of Major Moor's excavation is held in the archive at SAU (S1).
