Full Description

An archaeological evaluation uncovered a probable 18th century wall, which may have been part of a warehouse, smoke house, or some other industrial building, many of which are known to have been situated in the vicinity of Whapload Road. A mortar surface and a cobble surface, both of which probably date to a similar period, were also revealed. Earlier (undated) layers of build-up were observed in two deeper sondages within the trench. The layers appeared to be characteristic of a deposit type seen elsewhere in Lowestoft, and may have resulted from the disposal and dumping of waste on marginal land (S1).

A desk study was undertaken of the site to identify environmental issues included historic map regression which identified the sites history of being used for fish curers, industrial and residential use.
