Full Description

1995: Roman bronze scalpel handle. Traces of the iron blade remaining in the slot in the rectangular section segment of the handle. This has five pairs of grooves across the two broader faces, some of which still contain silver inlay (survives in two bands on one face, four on the other. Some heavily corroded patches on the tapered part of the handle. Handle length 78.2mm. Ralph Jackson of the British Museum comments that it is likely of 2nd to 3rd century date and that the silver inlay is rather unusual.
