Full Description

Unlocated Medieval buckle plate fragment. Openwork sheet metal with engraved decoration on front surface. Design consists of a pair of conjoined serpant-like beats with 'U shaped bodies and tails. The right hand beast has completely broken away. The eye of the surviving beast is in the form of a copper-alloy rivet. A simular but less elaborate buckle plate is illustrated in Norwich Households, 141 fig14. This is dervised from a 14th or 15th century deposit. Exact findspot unclear but found in Rattlesden parish.
