Full Description

1999: Unlocated Medieval harness fitting with heraldic decoration. Made of cast copper alloy, it has a rectangular loop for the leather, from one end of which extends a hook. At the furthest bend of the hook it is decorated with a small shield-shaped plate which bears the blazon OR/Argent fretty Sable. It has a criss-cross of gooves inlaid with black niello, and the ground is possibly silvered. Above the shield the hook curves back inward and is decorated with three transverse grooves. It continues into a short stub parallel to the loop, before a fresh break. Lots of filemarks. Exact findspot is unclear but from Mutford parish.
