Monument record WNN 035 - Cropmark of medieval enclosures, trackways, boundaries and possible sunken features and/or buildings

The cropmarks of a series of medieval enclosures, trackways, boundaries and possible sunken features and/or buildings are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3), alongside the medieval Church of St John the Baptist (WNN 006) and an area of thirteenth century pottery (WNN 004). WNN 007 ‘Old Yards’ to the south west of the site is recorded as being the location of the original manor house associated with the church, although no convincing evidence of it could be identified on the aerial photographs. Given the character and location of these cropmarks it is highly likely that these represent medieval settlement broadly contemporary with the church and that manorial site. Although a number of sub-rectangular pit-like features are recorded, whilst they could also be medieval in date, they may indicate a Saxon phase to the settlement and boundaries. Some aspects of the site have remained in use as post medieval field boundaries.
