Full Description

Site of now demolished Friends meeting house and burial ground built in 1700. The original timber framed building was sold to the friends by Joseph Clarke to the Friends for £200. In 1797 a piece of ground adjacent to the meeting house was purchased and a larger building erected, seating around 500. This building was brick and opened in 1799 and the earlier building became the women’s meeting room. The burial ground was extended in 1820 but closed in 1856, when Friends obtained land in the town cemetery. In 1858 a library was added to the land to the east of the meeting house. The site was sold in 1924 and demolished c.1990 (S1).

For the new Friends meeting house in use since 1936 see IPS 826.
