Full Description

The building is a rare example of a Friends mission hall, purpose built in the late 19th century and still in use. The hall was erected in 1897 to accommodate a more active pattern of worship than usual in Quaker meeting houses, with hymns and preaching. The building is a rare example of this distinct phase of Quaker activity. It was also built to provide an adult school to tackle literacy. The land adjoining the hall was purchased as a car park in 1958 and improvements were made to the building during the 1960s and 1970s. No burial ground is adjacent to the hall (S1).
