Summary

The site of a curvilinear or D-shaped enclosure of a middle to late Iron Age date is know from geophysical survey and aerial photographs and has been evaluated by excavation. This site is underlying the core of the Saxon settlement and Saxon Royal residence (RLM 013), and is part of the wider Rendlesham complex.

Full Description

May 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Beauty National Mapping Programme.
The fragmentary cropmarks are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3) showing parts of the curvilinear ditches which form part of a middle to late Iron Age D-shaped enclosure, recorded through geophysical survey (S4) and excavation (S5) and previously recorded under RLM 013. This site is underlying the core of the Saxon settlement and Saxon Royal residence (RLM 013), and is part of the wider Rendlesham complex. The aerial photographs have revealed comparatively little of the large curvilinear/D-shaped enclosure ditches known from the geophysics. Cropmarks relating to part of the circular enclosure within the main enclosure are also visible.
