Monument record RLM 076 - Cropmarks and soilmarks of boundary ditches and trackways of probable medieval to post medieval date

Please read our .

Summary

The cropmarks and soilmarks of boundary ditches and trackways of probable medieval to post medieval date, along with other fragmentary and undated features, visible on aerial photographs within the former grounds of Rendlesham Park (RLM 022). Some of the boundaries are likely to relate to land divisions pre-dating the hall. It is probable that some of the parallel boundary ditches may relate to an earlier approach to the hall (RLM 019). An area of possible earthworks visible in 1946 may relate to pre-park features, although it is possible that they relate to Second World War activity within the park – see RLM 069.

Full Description

November 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Beauty National Mapping Programme.
The cropmarks and soilmarks of boundary ditches and trackways of probable medieval to post medieval date, along with other fragmentary and undated features, visible on aerial photographs within the former grounds of Rendlesham Park (RLM 022) (S1-S5). Some of the boundaries are likely to relate to land divisions pre-dating the hall. It is probable that some of the parallel boundary ditches may relate to an earlier approach to the hall (RLM 019). An area of possible earthworks may be visible at TM 3426 5370 on (S1), these may relate to pre-park features, although it is possible that they relate to Second World War activity within the park – see RLM 069.
The extent of the site includes an area of parchmarks visible on early oblique aerial photographs of the site (S4-S5) to the south of the former hall site (RLM 021) – as depicted on Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S6). These features were not mapped as they may have related to recent activity, although it remains a possibly that they relate to archaeological elements, either associated with the hall or pre-dating it.
