Full Description
2014: The two test pits located behind 79 Whitling Street revealed Medieval deposits dating from the 12th century and later. From the laying out of the town grid in the later half of the 11th century, through to the early 19th century, this property was separate from The Guildhall. The test pits produced complex and deeply stratified archaeological deposits. Evidence of drying ovens and sequences of structures were uncovered suggesting intensive domestic use within these yards. A large assemblage of pottery dating from the 12th through to the 16th centuries was recovered including local glazed ware in a variety of forms. This site offers a stark contrast to the lack of domestic activity identified by the five test pits located behind The Guildhall (See BSE 446) (S1).
