Monument record ADT 013 - Cropmarks of a major system of enclosures, trackways and boundary ditches of possible Roman or medieval to post medieval date

Please read our .

Summary

The cropmarks of a major system of enclosures, trackways and boundary ditches of possible Roman or medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs. Elements appearing to pre-date the site have been recorded under ADT 101. See also ADT 014 and ADT 015 for enclosures and ring ditches recorded separately. The regularity of the enclosures and boundaries, combined with the fact that the site is aligned the same of the surrounding landscape, could indicate that site is predominantly medieval or later in date. However it is also possible that the enclosures and boundaries relate to Roman date settlement and fields and that the predominant alignment of these has persisted in the surrounding landscape.

Full Description

Field system and trackway (S1).
N.B. Trackway and one phase of field system respects ring ditch, ADT 014. A second phase does not, cutting both ADT 014 and an extremely small rectilinear enclosure or building, ADT 015.

April 2016. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Beauty National Mapping Programme.
The site of the previously recorded field system and trackway has been extended considerably to include additional cropmarks to the west and south of the original site area which are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S6). The site consists of a series of single and double ditched rectangular enclosures, trackways and boundary ditches. One major trackway within the western part of the site would appear to continue north into a swathe of multi-period cropmarks recorded under ADT 099. It must also be noted that one of the northern boundary ditches appears to continue towards into drainage of probable post medieval date and it is possible that some parts of this site may also relate to later drainage or post medieval field boundaries. One of the major southern boundaries also appears to continued by the line of hollow or wide shallow ditch on the lidar 2m resolution DTM data (ADT 102). However it is also possible that the enclosures and boundaries relate to Roman date settlement and fields and that the predominant alignment of these has persisted in the surrounding landscape.
