Summary

Single track railway from Barnwell Junction (Cambridge) to Mildenhall built by the Great Eastern Railway and opened 1884-5. Serving a sparsely populated area, the line was never very successful and was closed to passengers in 1962 and freight in 1964-5.

Full Description

The line from Barnwell Junction (Cambridge) to Fordham was nineteen miles of single-track railway built by the Great Eastern Railway as part of a through line to Mildenhall. It was opened in June 1884 but was never very succesful and it was closed to passengers on 18th June 1962. Freight continued to be carried until 13th July 1964 when all but the section between Fordham Junction and Burwell was closed entirely; this last section was closed on 19th April 1965 (S1).
