Monument record ELV 100 - Cropmarks of possible ditches of uncertain date and significance

Please read our .

Summary

The cropmarks of fragmentary ditches and possible incomplete rectilinear enclosures of unknown date and significance are visible on aerial photographs. There is a possibility that some of the mapped ‘ditches’ relate to periglacial striped ground or similar features. Cropmarks recorded to the west (ELV 101) coincided with an area of evaluations (ELV 053-054) and excavations (ELV 089/Area 12) in advance of the A11 dualling works, see records for details. The areas of the possible cropmarks assessed by full excavation revealed no archaeological features, suggesting that the cropmarks relate to geomorphological linear features either dismissed or not visible within the trench. This could suggest that some of the linear cropmarks in this site are also non-archaeological. However see nearby ELV 004 for possible Roman activity.
