Building record WBG 116 - Bull Ride, New Street, Woodbridge

2016 Heritage Statement: The Bull Ride was built in the 1880s by John Grout. In recent years the building has been used as an antique and furniture showroom. Previously there were other buildings on this site shown in 1838 Tithe Map as an L-shaped range on the street frontage and a smaller L-shaped range to the rear, enclosing an informal garden with a long thin range to the year western edge of the plot, none of these buildings survive today. The Bull Ride was probably completed c. 1886 and was mentioned in the 1887 sale particulars. The Bull Ride presents a 'polite; stuccoed elevation to New Street with a moulded cornice and parapet. A carriage arch on the right has a rusticated surround and projecting keystone, with original folding doors under a fixed fanlight. Alongside this is the cottage, its street entrance with rusticated keystone now blocked. Ground and first floor sash windows also have raised keystones. The cottage has a narrow central timber staircase, the ground floor room retains an original decorative chimneypiece, on the first floor level is an original fireplace. Behind the polite frontage the building is built of red brick laid in Flemish bond, under a pantile roof with a very long ridge. The bay divisions of the eastern flank wall are marked by attached brick buttresses, the second bay has two horizontal-sliding sash windows, and the third bay one window. The entrances to the former stables have timber lintels, some retain their original horizontal boarded partitions and there are remnants of original stable flooring (S1).
