Full Description
Timber Framed barn of probable 19th century orgins located within the cruitage of the Priory, a Grade II listed farmhouse. The barn appears with the ripoetery on the 1840 tithe map and incudes the main barn but the cart shed is not featured until later Ordance Survey mapping.
The main structure if the barn is a double height 4-bay timber-framed structure constructed in oak and elm off brick plinth base walls. Mortice holes provide clear evidence that originally the structure included diagonal braces between the intermediate posts and the tie beams. These have been removed at some point in time and replaced with oak knee braces, presumably in order to improve internal headroom. The original roof has been replaced by a modern structure clad in corrugated sheeting at a shallow pitch, with the oginal roof being at a steeper pitch, robaly of 50 degrees. At the eastern end of the barn, a reatibve recent mezzaine floor has been recenty added, however there are signs in the post and walls of previous mezzaine structures. This could have been an orginal feature. The lean-to section on the north side of the barn is a later addition. It has a pantiled roof and is constructed partly of brick, partly of softwood studs on a brick plinth. (S1)
