Full Description
2017: Trial trench evaluation revealed evidence for 11th-14th century occupation in the form of large pits probably for quarrying. The large pits which are thought to be for extraction contained a larger than average ceramic content which suggests a high useage for the site during this time period. It is possible that the extraction pit may have been excavated for materials in the building process for the castle given the close proximity. A property boundary and a structure by way of post holes including a post hole alignment were revealed, however they could not be dated or phased in conjunction with the pits. The depth of the archaeological horizon, at a minimum of 0.80m, suggested that the site had probably been used continuously over the last eight hundred years. The subsoil consisted of a dark soil-like composition with some building debris and oyster shells and was interpreted as a made-up layer from previous occupation and activity (S1)(S3).
2016: Archaeological monitoring was carried out following archaeological evaluation on Plot 1. Following on from previous evidence of quarrying on the site, it was established that the extent of quarrying existed mainly on the eastern end of the site. One pit of medieval date, and another of post medieval date were revealed. (S2)
