Full Description

An archaeological evaluation trench identified medieval settlement activity characterised by two ditches and a pit dating to between the 11th-14th century. The site has produced the largest assemblage of medieval pottery to have been recovered anywhere in Mellis in recent decades. One of the ditches dated more specifically to the 13th-14th century. Evidence for food waste disposal and the presence of fired clay, possibly from oven domes, are indicative of medieval settlement activity (S1)(S2).
