Full Description
The excavation of Site 32 revealed evidence of activity dating from the Early Bronze Age to the postmedieval period and included significant Early Iron Age settlement remains. Early Bronze Age activity comprised two Beaker period pits whilst the Early Iron Age occupation was represented by scattered pits and postholes, representing dispersed settlement, with evidence of a contemporary field system.
The results and subsequent analysis provide new evidence for Early Iron Age settlement and land division, and to a lesser extent earlier Bronze Age activity, in the Deben Valley. At the same time, whilst the dating evidence from a minimum of two further phases of land division is poor, they do offer some insight into the character and date of the area’s field systems and the extensive cropmark complexes recorded in the area (S2).
Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2017 (S1).
