Full Description

Early 16th century farmhouse and associated outbuildings. Most of the farm buildings were built by the Hatten family who acquired the site in 1794. The Grade II listed farmhouse is typical of those found in Suffolk. The brick and sashed front with a Doric open porch hides a much earlier building. The core of the house is a 16th century timber-framed structure which has undergone major alterations, most of which are 19th century. The brick casing was added in the mid-20th century. The barn at right angles to the house is also Grade II listed. It is late 16th century timber-framed and weatherboarded structure with a corrugated iron roof which was once thatched. It originally consisted of 5 bays. The building was extended at a later date however the sources are contradictory as to the exact date (either 17th century or 18th century) and how many extra bays were built (4 or 5). In the 19th century a parallel range was added to the north doubling the size of the building. Both barns have three early brick threshing floors and a 19th century stone flag extension. Attached to the east end of the barn is a brick and pantiled cowhouse with loose boxes. On the opposite side of the yard are various outbuidings including a timber-framed former 5-bay cartshed with granary loft which dates from the late 18th century. The cart entrances were infilled with studwork and weatherboarding at a later date. Only the eastern end of the upper floor survives intact (S1)(S2)(S9).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
