Full Description

Evaluation revealed two areas of archaeological significance. Within the north-east corner of the site, three fairly substantial pits were identified; these all contained pottery of Iron Age date. Along the southern edge of the site, two small, highly root disturbed pits were recorded. One of these contained Bronze Age pottery. The rest of the site showed signs of a high degree of truncation, probably from earlier episodes of tree clearance. The upper portion of natural geological deposits had to be removed in order to remove a highly root disturbed horizon (S1).

Monitoring identified a number of significant archaeological features were revealed at depth. A cluster of small pits towards the southern edge of the site are likely to be of Bronze Age or earlier date (Phase 1). Three pits were of Early to Middle Iron Age date (Phase 2), while four were of the Middle Iron Age (Phase 3). One of the Middle Iron Age pits was a considerably large feature of 1.8m depth. Undated features include a large rectilinear enclosure, measuring c.80m by c.70m. The ditches and associated features of the enclosure are poorly dated by finds but are likely to be of later prehistoric date (S2).
